Orthoses for the Elbow and Wrist Pain
Chun Min-Ho

Abstract
Upper limb orthoses are distinct from other orthoses because of the complexity of the human hand. There are many simultaneous joint motions that have to be considered for either mobilization or immobilization, short digital levers, and little soft tissue padding for bands and other components. Orthotic design for the upper limb must give equal focus to mechanical efficiency and precision of fit because comfort is critical for acceptance. Upper limb orthoses are more likely to be accepted by clients if there is a well-defined therapeutic purpose or if the orthosis provides a desired function that cannot be accomplished by any other means, such as substitution. The purpose of upper limb orthoses are to substitute for absent motor power, to assist weak segment, to support segments requiring positioning and immobilization, to provide traction, to enforce specific, directional control and to attach of devices. Orthoses for hand and wrist pain may be classified as orthoses for the arthritic hand and wrist, orthoses for cumulative trauma disorder and orthoses for sport-related disorders.
